Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian riverso.
Etymology: < Italian riverso backhanded cut or stroke with a fencing weapon (1409), specific use as noun of riverso reverse adj. Compare earlier reverse n. 6, and also punta riversa n.In α. forms (which are unparalleled in Italian) probably after punta riversa n.; compare punta dritta n. In γ. forms after Italian †roverso (early 14th cent.), regional (Northern) variant (with popular phonological development) of riverso , adjective (compare rovescio reverse side: see reversi n.).
Fencing. Now historical.
A backhanded cut or stroke with a sword, rapier, etc.; = reverse n. 6. Also figurative. Cf. punta riversa n.
