Etymology: < the name of Heinrich Adolf Rinne (1819–68), German otologist, who described a form of the test in 1855 ( Vierteljahrschr. f. d. prakt. Heilkunde 45 72). With Rinne's experiment, Rinne's test, etc., compare German Rinne'scher Versuch (1871 or earlier).

Designating (the result of) a hearing test in which a vibrating tuning fork is placed with its handle on a bone of the skull until its sound can no longer be heard, and then is moved close to the ear, when the sound is normally heard again.
