释义

ringwormn.1

Brit. /ˈrɪŋwəːm/, U.S. /ˈrɪŋˌwərm/
Forms: see ring n.1 and worm n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ring n.1, worm n.
Etymology: < ring n.1 + worm n., so called on account of the circular patches in which it manifests; for the likening of a skin disease to a creeping creature compare serpigo n. and also herpes n. With the second element compare also Old Icelandic reformr (showing a first element of uncertain origin) and related forms in other North Germanic languages. With the first element perhaps compare the Old English form bringcadle , denoting a kind of disease, if the palaeographically plausible emendation to *hringcadle is accepted (compare adle n. and the compound circulādl , lit. ‘circle disease’, which may denote the same medical condition):OE Lacnunga (2001) I. lxxx. 70 Wið micclum lice & bringcadle [prob. read hringcadle] wyrce sealfe. Compare also (unrelated) Old English rengwyrm intestinal worm ( < a first element of unknown origin + worm n.):OE tr. Pseudo-Apuleius Herbarium (Vitell.) (1984) cii. 148 Wið þæt rengwyrmas [?a1200 Harl. 6258B rencgwirmas] ymbe þone nafolan derigen genim þas ylcan wyrte absinthium.., hyt cwelþ þa wyrmas.
