Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: account v., -able suffix; French accountable.
Etymology: Probably partly < account v. + -able suffix, and partly < Anglo-Norman accountable, accomptable, acomptable subject to accounting, responsible, answerable (to) (all mid 14th cent. or earlier), involved in accounting, responsible for accounting (early 15th cent. or earlier) < aconter , acompter account v. + -able -able suffix. Compare countable adj.
1. Chiefly of persons (in later use also organizations, etc.): liable to be called to account or to answer for responsibilities and conduct; required or expected to justify one's actions, decisions, etc.; answerable, responsible.
