单词 roc
释义

rocn.

Brit. /rɒk/, U.S. /rɑk/
Forms:

α. 1500s roche, 1600s roque, 1700s rock, 1700s– roc, 1700s– rokh.

β. 1500s–1600s ruck, 1500s–1600s rucke, 1500s–1700s ruc, 1500s– ruch, 1600s rucha, 1800s– rukh, 1800s– rukhkh.

Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Partly also a borrowing from Latin. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Arabic ruḵḵ; Latin rochus; French roc, ruc.
Etymology: < Arabic ruḵḵ, of unknown origin, perhaps a loanword. In α. forms originally via post-classical Latin rochus (a1374 in the passage translated in quot. 1579), in later use via French roc (1653; 1705 in A. Galland's French translation of the Arabian Nights, the source translated in quot. 1712; also rock (1741); already in Old French as ruc (c1298 in Marco Polo in an apparently isolated attestation)). In β. forms probably originally reflecting Old French ruc in Marco Polo, but in later use directly < Arabic ruḵḵ. Compare Italian †ruc (beginning of the 14th cent. in a translation of Marco Polo; also 1598 in Florio as †rochi (apparently intended as singular) and †ruch ), Spanish rocho (a1502 in the passage translated in quot. 1631; also as ruc (first half of the 18th cent.)), Portuguese roque (1502 in a translation of Marco Polo as †ruth (transmission error); also as †ruc (beginning of the 17th cent.)).
A gigantic mythical bird of prey, legendary in the Middle East. Cf. simurgh n.The legend of the roc first reached the West through the account of Marco Polo (see the etymology), and was popularized by its inclusion in the Arabian Nights.
