单词 ringild
释义

ringildn.

Brit. /ˈrɪŋɡɪld/, U.S. /ˈrɪŋɡɪld/
Forms:

α. late Middle English rynguyld, 1500s ryngelde, 1500s ryngylld, 1800s ringeld, 1800s ringilde, 1800s ringill, 1800s ryngill, 1800s– ringild.

β. 1500s ringylh.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Welsh. Etymons: Latin ringillus, ringeldus; Welsh rhingyll.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ringillus sergeant (c1262 in a British source), also ringeldus, ringildus, ringoldus (frequently from 1315 in British sources) and its etymon Welsh rhingyll (13th cent.; earlier in rhingyllaeth sergeantship, ringildry (12th cent.)), of unknown origin. Compare earlier ringildie n. and ringildship n., and also ringildry n. Compare later rhingyll n.The ld in the Latin (and English) forms probably results from a mishearing of the Welsh voiceless ll (/ɬ/, alien to both languages). The final lh in the β. forms reflects a common early modern spelling variant of Welsh ll.
In medieval and early modern Wales.
