Etymology: < ring n.¹ + -ette suffix.The game was invented by Sam Jacks (1915–75), Director of Parks and Recreation in North Bay, Ontario. The first game is said to have been played in the winter of 1963-64 in Espanola, Northern Ontario.

A form of ice hockey, played chiefly by women and girls, in which no intentional body contact is allowed and a straight stick is used to control a rubber ring, rather than a puck.
