Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin ringent-, ringēns, ringī.
Etymology: < classical Latin ringent-, ringēns, present participle of ringī to open the mouth wide, show the teeth (see rictus n.); in specific use in sense 1 partly after scientific Latin ringens (1753 in botany as a specific epithet, 1758 in zoology as a specific name).

a. Botany. Of a corolla: bilabiate, with the lips widely separated; (in early use also) personate (now rare). Also (of a plant): having a flower of this type (rare).
