Etymology: < the name of Sir John Richardson (1787–1865), Scottish naval surgeon and Arctic explorer, after various uses of scientific Latin richardsonii, species name (first recorded 1822 in Arctomys Richardsonii, J. Sabine in Trans. Linnaean Soc. 13 589).
Used attributive and in the genitive in the names of birds and mammals first collected by Richardson or named in his honour.
