Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rigel.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin Rigel (1521) < Arabic rijl , short for rijl al-jawzā' al-yusrā denoting this star, literally ‘the left leg of the jawzā'’ (compare rijl al-jawzā' al-yumnā denoting κ Orionis, a weaker star in the same constellation, literally ‘the right leg of the jawzā'’) < rijl leg, foot + al the + jawzā' , the Arabic name originally of the constellation Gemini, later also of the constellation Orion (see Betelgeuse n.) + al the + yusrā left. The star is so called on account of its position on the left ‘leg’ of Orion.

Astronomy.

The brightest star in the constellation Orion (β Orionis), a visual binary of which the larger component is a blue-white supergiant.
