单词 rigald
释义

rigaldn.

Forms:

α. Middle English rigeholt, Middle English riggeholt, Middle English righolt, Middle English righot (perhaps transmission error), Middle English ryghholt, Middle English rygholt, Middle English rygolt, Middle English ryngolt, 1500s richolt.

β. Middle English ragald, Middle English regal, Middle English regald, Middle English regaud, Middle English regold, Middle English rigald, Middle English rigold, Middle English ringold, Middle English ryghold, Middle English rygoll, Middle English ryngold.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Middle Low German. Perhaps a borrowing from Dutch. Perhaps from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Riga.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably either from or after a compound in Middle Low German or Middle Dutch showing as its second element Middle Low German holt or Middle Dutch hout timber (see holt n.1). Compare Middle Dutch riehout plank, lath (1343–5 as rijhout , a1377 as ryehout ; < rie , rye , rij lath, ruler, line, etc.: see row n.1) and also Middle Dutch rīghelhout (a1376; < rīghel lath, cross-beam, bolt (a1380); Dutch richel ; compare Middle Dutch rēgel plank, lath, ruler: see rail n.2), Middle Low German rēgelholt , rīgelholt horizontal beam, crossbar ( < Middle Low German rīgel , rēgel horizontal load-bearing timber, plank, cross-beam: see rail n.2), although none of these attested compounds corresponds closely with the English forms. It has alternatively been suggested that this word may be ultimately < the name of Riga (Middle Dutch Rijge , Middle Low German Rīge : see Riga n.1), with reference to the provenance of timber imported from the Baltic by the Hanseatic League (compare later Riga deal, Riga oak at Riga n.1 1), and an instance of Middle Dutch Rijges houts (plural; 1454), interpreted as a genitive compound containing the place name, has been cited in support of this argument; for further discussion, see L. F. Salzman Building in Eng. (new ed., 1967) 246) and B. Sandahl Middle Eng. Sea Terms (1951) I. 82–3. The β. forms may also suggest remodelling by association with (or possibly direct borrowing < ) the simplex forms Middle Dutch rīghel , rēgel or Middle Low German richel , rīgel , rēgel (see above ). Compare post-classical Latin ribaldum (1310 in a British source), righoltum (1352 in a British source), ringoltum (1354 in a British source), regaltum (1357 in a British source). Compare also clapholt n., fatholt n.It is unclear whether the following show the Middle English or the Latin word:1324–5 in N. S. B. Gras Early Eng. Customs Syst.
