Origin: From a proper name; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: proper name Ricard.
Etymology: < the name of Paul Ricard (1909–97), who founded the Société Paul Ricard in 1932 manufacturing this drink. In use denoting a drink of Ricard probably after French ricard (mid 20th cent.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (ri·kaɹ) /ˈriːkɑː(r)/.
A proprietary name for: an aniseed-flavoured aperitif; a drink of this.
