Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ribose.
Etymology: < German Ribose (E. Fischer 1891, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 24 4215) < rib- (in Ribonsäure (also Fischer 1891: see below)) + -ose -ose suffix2.Fischer introduced both Ribose and Ribonsäure in the same paper. The latter was formed < ribon, formed arbitrarily by rearrangement of some of the letters of arabinose, the name of the related sugar from which Fischer prepared ribose + Säure acid.
Biochemistry.
An aldopentose sugar, whose laevorotatory ( d-) isomer occurs widely in nature as a constituent of nucleosides and several vitamins and enzymes.
