单词 ribible
释义

ribiblen.

Brit. /rɪˈbɪbl/, U.S. /rɪˈbɪb(ə)l/
Forms:

α. Middle English rabybill, Middle English rouwebible, Middle English rowbyble, Middle English rubible, Middle English rybible, Middle English–1500s 1700s– ribible, 1600s ribibble.

β. Middle English rable, Middle English ribil.

Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) a variant of alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French rebeble ; ribibe n.
Etymology: Apparently < Middle French rebeble (probably 14th cent. in an isolated attestation), apparently a blend of rebibe ribibe n. and Old French, Middle French rebelle (14th cent.), a variant of rebibe with dissimilation (compare similarly rebec rebec n.); alternatively, the English word may perhaps (although attested earlier) show an alteration of ribibe n. by association with the musical terms treble adj. (compare trible at treble adj. and adv. Forms), quatreble adj. (compare quatryble at quatreble adj. and n. α. forms), and quinible n., although these are all first attested later, and the semantic match is not exact. The β. forms may reflect Middle French rebelle (see above), or may simply show reduced forms. On sense 2 see discussion at ribibe n.
Now archaic and historical.
