Forms: 1700s– rigorism, 1800s rigourism.
Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: rigour n.; Latin rigor , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < rigour n. or its etymon classical Latin rigor + -ism suffix, perhaps after French rigorisme (1696, earliest in the Low Countries). Compare Spanish rigorismo (mid 18th cent.), Portuguese rigorismo (1783), Italian rigorismo (1745).
1. Extreme strictness in interpreting or enforcing a law, precept, etc.; an instance of this.
