单词 rigor
释义

rigorn.

Brit. /ˈrʌɪɡɔː/, /ˈrɪɡə/, U.S. /ˈrɪɡər/, /ˈraɪɡər/
Forms: Middle English rigoor, Middle English– rigor.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; apparently modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: rigour n.
Etymology: Originally a variant of rigour n., now (in British English) distinguished in spelling in this sense, and frequently (in both British and U.S. English) having a distinct pronunciation, apparently reflecting a pronunciation of classical Latin rigor current in the medical profession.
Medicine.
1. Originally: †the sensation of numbness, tingling, or prickling; (also) stiffness; an instance of this (obsolete). In later use: the feeling of being very cold, accompanied by shivering or shaking, typically occurring as the body temperature rises in certain fevers, esp. those of infectious or toxic origin; an instance of this. Cf. rigour n. 7.
