Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ribattuta.
Etymology: < Italian ribattuta repeated striking (16th cent.; 17th cent. or earlier in specific musical use) < ribattuta , feminine of past participle of ribattere to strike again (1313) < ri re- prefix + battere to strike ( < post-classical Latin battere : see combat v.). Compare later battuta n.
Music.
An ornament consisting of a repeated sequence of notes, gradually increasing in speed and leading into a trill. Cf. battuta n.

1825 J. F. Danneley Encycl. Music Ribattuta, a species of ornamental singing, consisting of a sort of shake, of which every other note is dotted.
1897 T. Baker Dict. Musical Terms (rev. ed.) at Trio A peculiar mode of commencing the trill, called the ribattuta, and still sometimes employed by vocalists, flautists, and violoncellists on account of the smoothness attainable thereby.
1926 Times 16 Jan. 8/2 The ribattuta, a gradual quickening of notes into a shake, is so incessantly used here as to become almost disfiguring.
1964 Musical Q. 50 193 A trill also anchored on the main note, which starts in slow dotted rhythm, accelerates gradually, and ends with a fast trill. It is the ribattuta of the Italians.
2002 D. Ledbetter Bach's Well-tempered Clavier 203 The most likely solution is to use a version of the ribattuta, i.e. beginning on the main note and starting slowly, perhaps after a slight pause to let the main note tell, and get quicker.
