Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French rifloir.
Etymology: Probably < French rifloir, a type of file (16th cent. in Middle French; < rifler , riffler to scratch, to scrape off, etc. (see rifle v.1) + -oir -ory suffix1), with remodelling of the ending after -er suffix1. Perhaps compare French riflard woodworking plane with a curved blade (1622 as rifflard in this sense) and also Middle Low German riffel, ryfell rasp, file.With German Riffeleisen in quot. 1797 compare riffeln to fray, tear, rasp, to comb (see ripple v.1).
A narrow elongated tool with a curved file surface at each end, used by sculptors, metalworkers, and woodcarvers in filing concave surfaces.
