Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rhytidoma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin rhytidoma (1837 or earlier), probably < Greek ῥυτίδωμα wrinkle, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Aristophanes Plutus 1052, 1066 < ancient Greek ῥυτιδοῦν to make wrinkled, shrivel up ( < ῥυτιδ- , ῥυτίς wrinkle < the same base as ῥυσός shrivelled, wrinkled (see Rhyssa n.) + -ις -id suffix2, perhaps via a verbal adjective in -τός ) + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare French rhytidome (1855 or earlier).
Botany.
In a stem or root: the outer part of the bark, composed of the periderm and the layers of dead tissue exterior to this.
