Etymology: < ring n.1 + dance n. Compare Dutch ringdans (16th cent. in Kiliaan as ringhdans), Middle Low German ringedans (also ringeldans), German Ringtanz (16th cent.; also Ringeltanz), Icelandic hringdans, Swedish ringdans (17th cent.), early modern Danish, Danish ringdans. The later uses in English frequently reflect one or other of these Germanic parallels.
A dance in which the dancers form a circle. Also figurative.rare between the mid 17th and early 19th centuries.
