Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rinderpest.
Etymology: < German Rinderpest (1796 or earlier) < Rinder- , combining form of Rind (see rother n.) + Pest (see pest n.).
Veterinary Medicine.
A highly contagious and virulent disease affecting cattle and other ruminants, caused by a morbillivirus and characterized by fever, erosive inflammation of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, and diarrhoea; also called cattle plague. Frequently attributive. Also in extended use and figurative.
