Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare earlier run n.1Perhaps compare rare Old English ryniga , of uncertain meaning: perhaps ‘liquid that runs off’ (a derivative of run v.), attested twice from the same source, each time in collocation with sealt :eOE Bald's Leechbk. Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese rin.
Etymology: < Japanese rin monetary unit (1717), standard subdivision of the yen (1873; attested earlier denoting e.g. a unit of numerical quantity (10th cent.) and a unit of weight (1394)) < Middle Chinese (compare Chinese li n.3). Compare earlier li n.3 Compare earlier sen n.1 and also yen n.1
Now historical.
A Japanese monetary unit, equal to 1/ 10 sen; a coin of this value.The rin was removed from circulation in 1954.
