Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori rimu.
Etymology: < Maori rimu.With the initial d- in the α. forms compare the note at rangatira n. The reduplicated form Maori rimurimu cited in quot. 18201 at sense 1 is not otherwise attested in this sense; it is however more frequently used as a variant of rimu type of seaweed, originally a figurative use of rimu denoting the tree, on account of the appearance of the seaweed resembling the foliage of the rimu tree.
