Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rhyolith.
Etymology: < German Rhyolith (F. von Richthofen 1860, in Jahrbuch der Kaiserlich-königlichen Geologischen Reichsanstalt 11 156; irregularly < ancient Greek ῥύαξ stream of lava (see rhyacolite n.) + German -lith -lite comb. form1), with remodelling of the ending after -lite comb. form1.
Geology.
Originally: a variety of trachyte, containing quartz. In later use: a typically pale, fine-grained extrusive volcanic rock of granitic composition, often porphyritic in texture and commonly showing flow structure.
