Etymology: < scientific Latin Rhynchota, former order name ( H. Burmeister Handbuch der Entomologie (1835) II. 45; < rhyncho- rhyncho- comb. form + + -a -a suffix², with insertion of -t- for euphony; alteration of earlier Rhyngota (Fabricius 1799), Ryngota (Fabricius 1775)) + -ous suffix.

Entomology. Now disused.

Belonging to the former order Rhynchota of insects with sucking mouthparts, broadly equivalent to the modern order Hemiptera (bugs) with the addition of Siphonaptera (fleas).
