Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: right n., right adj., wise adj. Etymology: Apparently < either right n. or right adj. + wise adj. (or perhaps wise n.1: compare -wise comb. form), or < the Germanic bases of these words. Perhaps the reflex of a Germanic compound which is reflected also by Middle Low German rechtwīs (adverb) correctly, on good grounds, rechtwīse (adjective) knowing the law, and by the apparent derivative formations Old High German rehtwīsīc just, lawful, rightful, rehtwīslīh sensible, and which is perhaps (if the first element shows the adjective) also reflected by Old Icelandic réttvíss, Old Swedish rätvis (Swedish rättvis), rætwis (Danish retvis), all in the sense ‘just, righteous’.Among other formations in -wīs in Old English compare especially (apparently with noun as first element) nēadwīs needful, fitting, due, and (apparently with adjective as first element) ðearlwīs strict, severe, relentless; compare also gescēadwīs , scēadwīs sagacious, intelligent, rational, reasonable, wise, and brægdwīs crafty, stæfwīs lettered, learned, getælwīs skilled in arithmetic. Compare also wrongous adj. A number of the α. and β. forms show the development of an unstressed medial vowel. The β. forms reflect reduction of the vowel in the final element and/or loss of /w/; in many cases they show remodelling after either -ous suffix, -uous suffix, or (in the case of the usual modern form) -eous suffix, which probably results from remodelling of a form showing an unstressed medial vowel. N.E.D. (1909) also gives the pronunciation (rəi·tyəs) /ˈraɪtjəs/. Pronunciation with an affricate /tʃ/ as medial consonant is attested in E. Coles Compl. Eng. Schoolmaster (1674). Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: righteous adj.; English gerihtwīsian. Etymology: < righteous adj. In early use probably also partly aphetic < Old English gerihtwīsian (see note below). In early use frequently rendering post-classical Latin iustificare justify v. With the later use compare righteousing n., righteouser n., unrighteous v..In Old English the prefixed form gerihtwīsian (compare y- prefix) is much more frequent than the simplex verb. It is likely that the Middle English forms partly show aphetic reflexes of the prefixed verb (compare especially quot. c1175). The apparent variants rightwished, rihtwisehed (see quot. a1400) perhaps show substitution of or confusion with righteoushead n. society > morality > duty or obligation > moral or legal constraint > immunity or exemption from liability > justification > justify [verb (transitive)] OE Ælfric (Cambr.
