Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ridge n.1, withe n.
Etymology: < ridge n.1 + withe n. The β. forms show reduction of the second syllable and the γ. forms remodelling by association with compounds in -worth (compare e.g. halfpennyworth n., pennyworth n. and forms at those entries). Compare later rigwithe n., rigwiddie n., rigwithy n.
English regional (chiefly north-west midlands) in later use. Now rare.

2. The shaft of a cart. Obsolete. rare.Apparently arising from confusion between the shaft of a cart and the band or rope used to support this.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
