单词 ridgel
释义

ridgeln.

Brit. /ˈrɪdʒl/, U.S. /ˈrɪdʒ(ə)l/
Forms: 1500s–1600s ridgell, 1600s rigel, 1600s rigele, 1600s rigell, 1600s rigelle, 1600s rigil, 1600s–1800s ridgil, 1600s– ridgel, 1700s ridgill; English regional (chiefly northern and midlands) 1800s rigil, 1800s– ridgell, 1800s– ridgul (Worcestershire), 1800s– rudgel (south-west midlands), 1900s– ridgil.
Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: ridge n.1, -el suffix1; riggold n.
Etymology: Either < ridge n.1 + an uncertain suffix (perhaps compare -el suffix1), or a remodelling of riggold n. after ridge n.1 Compare earlier ridgeling n. Compare also earlier rig n.2, riggold n., rigling n., riggon n., riggot n.1, all in this sense and apparently ultimately reflecting forms of rig n.1 rather than ridge n.1 For the likely semantic motivation of these words see rig n.2The form riginal appearing alongside ridgel in quot. 1901 apparently reflects a widespread folk-etymological remodelling of the present word as though an aphetic variant of original n. (compare original in the same sense in quot. 1920 at riggot n.1).
Now rare exc. regional.
= rig n.2 Also in extended use.
