Etymology: Either < ridge n.¹ + an uncertain suffix (perhaps compare -el suffix¹), or a remodelling of riggold n. after ridge n.¹ Compare earlier ridgeling n. Compare also earlier rig n.², riggold n., rigling n., riggon n., riggot n.¹, all in this sense and apparently ultimately reflecting forms of rig n.¹ rather than ridge n.¹ For the likely semantic motivation of these words see rig n.²The form riginal appearing alongside ridgel in quot. 1901 apparently reflects a widespread folk-etymological remodelling of the present word as though an aphetic variant of original n.
