Etymology: < French rhoeadine (1837 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek ῥοιαδ- , ῥοιάς corn poppy ( < ancient Greek ῥοιά , variant of ῥόα pomegranate (perhaps a loanword or perhaps < an ablaut variant of the base of ρεῖν to flow: see rheid n.) + -άς -ad suffix¹, perhaps so called on account of its red flowers) + French -ine -ine suffix⁵, after scientific Latin rhoeas , specific epithet ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 507). In sense 2 after German Rhoeadin (O. Hesse 1865, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. Suppl. 4 51).
