Etymology: < German Rhodinol (U. Eckart 1891, in Archiv der Pharm. 229 364) < ancient Greek ῥόδινος of or from roses ( < ῥόδον rose (see rhodo- comb. form) + -ινος -ine suffix²) + German -ol -ol suffix.

Chemistry.

A fragrant liquid isolated from rose oil and other plant oils, and used in perfumery and cosmetics. In later use also: spec. one of the isomeric components of this liquid (see below).Rhodinol consists largely of two isomeric open-chain terpenoid alcohols, and is identical to citronellol except in the proportions of these isomers; the name is specifically applied to 3,7-dimethyl-7-octen-1-ol. Formula: C₁₀H₂₀O.

1956 I. L. Finar Org. Chem. II. viii. 265 Rhodinol is identical with citronellol, but the proportions of the two forms are different from those which occur in citronellol.

1991 Backpacker Dec. 69/3 Lemon-scented Kiss Off uses an SPF 15 sunscreen (PABA) along with citronella and rhodinol.

2001 R. Singh Encycl. Dict. Biomedicine 261 Geranium oil..is also the basic medium for the manufacture of rhodinol and its esters.
