1949 F. E. Clark in Adv. Agronomy 1 246 It would be more logical to speak of this microflora in terms of the root surfaces than in terms of the soil adjacent to the roots of plants. This goal can be obtained by the use of the term, rhizoplane. The rhizoplane is defined as the external surfaces of plant roots together with any closely adhering particles of soil or debris.
