Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: rhizo- comb. form, -phore comb. form.
Etymology: < rhizo- comb. form + -phore comb. form, after German Wurzelträger (1874 in the source translated in quot. 1875). Compare rhizophorous adj.
Botany.
In many clubmosses of the genus Selaginella and certain other members of the family Lycopodiaceae: a leafless branch arising at the fork of a stem, which grows downwards and bears roots on contact with the earth.
