Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rhizophora.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rhizophora, genus name ( Linnaeus Genera plantarum (1737) 137) < post-classical Latin rhizo- rhizo- comb. form + classical Latin -phora (see -phore comb. form). Compare Byzantine Greek ῥιζοϕόρος bearing roots ( < ancient Greek ῥιζο- rhizo- comb. form + -ϕόρος -phore comb. form).
Botany.
A genus of tropical mangrove trees with prop roots arising from the stem and branches (family Rhizophoraceae); (also rhizophora) a mangrove of this genus, esp. the red mangrove, R. mangle. Also: the timber of any of these trees.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 443.
