Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rhizomorpha.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rhizomorpha, genus name (A. G. Roth 1791, in Annalen der Botanick 1 7) < rhizo- rhizo- comb. form + -morpha (see -morph comb. form).
Now chiefly historical and rare.
In early use: a (former) genus of fungi comprising saprophytic forms occurring as root-like strands; (also rhizomorpha) a fungus of this genus. In later use also: = rhizomorph n. 1.The genus was based on rhizomorphs of certain saprophytic or parasitic fungi, mistaken for independent fungi.

1841 Penny Cycl. XIX. 476/1 Rhizomorpha, a singular genus of fungi, having altogether the appearance of a tree. The species are found in damp cellars, old walls, mines and other subterranean places.
