Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: rhizo- comb. form, -carp comb. form.
Etymology: < rhizo- comb. form + -carp comb. form, after either scientific Latin Rhizocarpae ( A. J. G. C. Batsch Tabula affinitatum regni vegetabilis (1802) 261; later Rhizocarpeae) or German Rhizokarp (1828 or earlier).
Now rare.
Any plant of the (former) class Rhizocarpeae (now the family Marsileaceae) of aquatic and semiaquatic ferns; a marsileaceous plant.

1952 W. J. Miller Introd. Hist. Geol. (ed. 6) xviii. 213 Spores and spore-cases of certain aquatic plants (rhizocarps), probably related to very simple spore plants, are very abundant in Devonian shales, especially those of Marcellus and Hamilton ages.
