单词 rhinodon
释义

rhinodonn.

Brit. /ˈrʌɪnədɒn/, U.S. /ˈraɪnəˌdɑn/
Forms: 1800s rhineodon, 1800s– rhinodon.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Rhineodon, Rhinodon.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rhineodon (later Rhinodon), former genus name (see note) < ancient Greek ῥίνη file, rasp (see rhinobatid n.) + scientific Latin -odon -odon comb. form, so called in allusion to the shark's rows of small teeth. The genus name originally appeared as Rhiniodon, with a description by A. Smith, in the S. Afr. Commerc. Advertiser for 5 Nov. 1828 (see M. J. Penrith in Copeia (1972) No. 2, p. 362). This form might be interpreted as representing ancient Greek ῥινίον ‘small file’. However, in the formal description published in 1829 ( Zool. Jrnl. 16 433) the name was printed as Rhincodon. This was almost certainly an error for an intended form Rhineodon, and the latter was widely adopted, as was the emended form Rhinodon ( J. Müller & F. G. J. Henle Systematische Beschriebung der Plagiostomen (1839) ii. 77). However, in 1984 the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (Opinion 1278) accepted Rhincodon Smith, 1829 as the correct genus name.
Now rare.
The whale shark, Rhincodon typus; (in form Rhinodon) the genus comprising this (now disused).
