Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin rimalis; Latin rīmula.
Etymology: Probably partly < post-classical Latin rimalis fissure, crack (late 13th cent. in the passage translated in quot. a14001; < classical Latin rīma cleft, crack, fissure (see rima n.) + -ālis : see -el suffix2), and partly < classical Latin rīmula small crack < rīma + -ula -ula suffix. Compare also post-classical Latin rimella small crack, fissure (12th cent. in a British glossarial source).
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
A crack in the skull. Cf. rima n.
