Etymology: Apparently either < an unattested Anglo-Norman or Middle French phrase *rime couée, or formed in English < Anglo-Norman and Middle French rime rhyme n. + Anglo-Norman and Middle French couée, feminine of coué tailed ( < coue cue n.3 + : see -ate suffix2), apparently after post-classical Latin rithmus caudatus (14th cent. in a British source). Compare French rime couée (1841 or earlier, modelled on the use in English). Compare tail-rhyme n. at tail n.1 Compounds 2, tailed rhyme at tailed adj.1 1d.Forms in rh- show the influence of rhyme n.
Prosody.
A verse form in which a couplet, triplet, or stanza is followed by a single additional, usually shorter, line, either unrhymed or rhyming with another such line occurring further on in the poem; (also) a stanza having this form. Cf. tail-rhyme n. at tail n.1 Compounds 2.Sometimes used more specifically with reference to a six-line stanza rhyming aabccb.
