Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Rhine , stone n.
Etymology: < the name of the river Rhine (see Rhine n.1) + stone n. Compare German Rheinkiesel , lit. ‘Rhine pebble’ (1780 or earlier; subsequently also in sense 2), and also French caillou du Rhin (1781 or earlier).
