Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rhinarium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rhinarium hairless tip of an animal's nose ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 18) < ancient Greek ῥιν- , ῥίς nose (see rhino- comb. form) + post-classical Latin -arium -arium suffix. Compare scientific Latin rhinarius of the nose or nostrils (1805 or earlier).
1. Entomology.
a. In the mouthparts of some insects: the lower section of a divided clypeus, situated between the postclypeus and the labrum; the anteclypeus. Now rare.Originally supposed by Kirby to be associated with the sense of smell.
