Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German rhexigen , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < German rhexigen ( A. de Bary Vergleichende Anat. der Vegetationsorgane der Phanerogamen u. Farne (1877) i. vii. 209 (in W. Hofmeister Handb. der physiol. Bot. III); < ancient Greek ῥῆξις action or fact of breaking (see rhexis n.) + German -gen : see -genous comb. form) + -ous suffix.
Botany.
Of an intercellular space in plant tissue: formed by the spontaneous mechanical rupture of cells. Cf. lysigenous adj., schizogenous adj. at schizo- comb. form 1.
