Etymology: < Rheum n.2 + -ic suffix. In rheumic acid n. (b) at main sense, after German Rheumsäure (Kubly 1867, in Pharmaceut. Zeitschr. f. Russland 6 611). Compare rheumate n.
Chemistry.
rheumic acid n. (a) (J. Henderson's name for) an acid occurring in the stem of garden rhubarb, later identified with oxalic acid (obsolete); (b) an acid derived from rheotannic acid (not identified) (now rare).
