Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin rheumatismus ; rheumatism n.
Etymology: In quot. ?a1425 at sense 1 perhaps a transmission error for an otherwise unrecorded Middle English noun *reumatisme < classical Latin rheumatismus (see later rheumatism n., and compare Middle English reumatisme , adjective: see Middle Eng. Dict. at reumatisme), although the ending may perhaps result instead from association with rheumatize v. or with words in -ise suffix2; compare also Middle French reumatisse (a1500), apparently showing a variant of reumatisme rheumatism n. with remodelling of the ending. In later use an alteration of rheumatism n., either with shortening of the ending or by association with words in -ise suffix2; compare also French rumatice (1693), French regional reumatisse, rheumatisse, rumatisse, etc.Forms with further reduction of the ending or the stem, e.g. rheumaty, rhemus, are also sometimes encountered.
