Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rheingold.
Etymology: < German Rheingold, literally ‘gold of the Rhine’ ( < Rhein , the name of the River Rhine + Gold gold n.1), in Das Rheingold, the name of an opera by Richard Wagner (first performed in 1869), the first part of the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen.
Now historical.
In full Rheingold Express. A luxury train which ran along the course of the Rhine between the Hook of Holland (near Rotterdam) and Basel.The train operated from 1928–38, and as a limited West German service between 1951–61. From 1962 it once again linked the Netherlands and Switzerland, ceasing operation in 1987.
