Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin Rhaetus , -o- connective, romance n.
Etymology: < classical Latin Rhaetus Rhaetian (see Rhaetian n.) + -o- connective + romance n., after German Rhäto-Romanisch (Diefenbach, 1831). Compare earlier Rhaeto-Romanic n.A form Rhaeto-Rumantsch is also sometimes found.

Any of several related Romance languages, including the Romansch dialects of Graubünden (or Grisons) in south-eastern Switzerland, and, in Italy, the Ladin dialects of the Dolomitic Alps, and the Friulian dialects around Udine, in the Friuli-Venzia Giulia region; these languages collectively. Cf. Rhaeto-Romanic n.There is some debate on the distinctness of these languages, especially Friulian, some linguists regarding them as being closely related to northern Italian dialects. See G.
