Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rhätizit.

Etymology: < German Rhätizit (A. G. Werner 1815, also as Rhätzit , in C. A. S. Hoffman Handbuch der Mineralogie II. 319, IV. 128), apparently < the name of Rhaetia (German Rhätien : see Rhaetian n.) + -it -ite suffix¹, although the element -iz- is unexplained.

Mineralogy. Now historical and rare.

A silicate of aluminium now regarded as identical with kyanite.
