Etymology: < Rhaetia, also Raetia (classical Latin Rhaetia, also Raetia), the name of a Roman province in the Alps, including the Tyrol and parts of Bavaria and Switzerland ( < classical Latin Rhaetus (also Raetus ) of or belonging to Rhaetia, (noun) native or inhabitant of Rhaetia + -ia -ia suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare Middle French, French rhétien (1583 as adjective, early 19th cent. as noun, 1813 denoting the ancient language of Rhaetia). Compare later Rhaetic adj., Rhaetic n.Ancient authors (e.g. Pliny) held that the Raetī derived their name from their leader, Raetus. Only the form Raetia is found in Latin inscriptions; classical manuscripts usually use the form Rhaetia.
