Zuccarini Flora Japonica (1835) II. 36 ff. 121-123) < ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin (see retinite n.) + σπορά seed (see spore n.), with reference to the resinous channels on the outer surface of the seed. In β. forms < scientific Latin Retinispora (see above).

Originally: any of several Japanese cypresses constituting the former genus Retinispora (later spelt Retinospora), now included in Chamaecyparis; (also, in form Retinispora or Retinospora) the genus itself. In later use: any of various (varieties of) trees and shrubs of the genus Chamaecyparis and allied genera having permanently juvenile (needle-like) foliage, esp. grown for ornament or as hedging.
