retinopathy of prematurity n. a disorder characterized by the proliferation of blood vessels and fibrous tissue in the retina and adjacent parts of the eye, typically occurring in premature babies of low birthweight given high concentrations of oxygen, and often resulting in blindness; also called retrolental fibroplasia.
