单词 reusie
释义

reusiev.

Forms: Old English hreosian (rare), Old English hreousian (rare), Old English hreowsian, Old English hriowsian, Old English hryowsian (rare), Old English hrywsian (rare), Old English reowsian, early Middle English hreosie, early Middle English reorsie (transmission error), early Middle English reose, early Middle English reouse, early Middle English reowsie, early Middle English reusi, early Middle English rewse, early Middle English riewsie, early Middle English riwsi, early Middle English rouse.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian -hriūsigia (only in the prefixed verb bihriūsigia bireusy v.), Old High German (in late sources) riuwesōn to repent of (a sin) (Middle High German riuwesen , riusen to repent of (a sin), to lament) < the Germanic base of either Old English hrēow sorrowful (see rue v.1) or the related noun rue n.1 + the Germanic base of Old English -sian , suffix forming verbs from adjectives and nouns (see discussion at cleanse v.). Compare reusing n., and also rue v.1The Old English form hrywsian may preserve an isolated trace of inherited i-mutation of the base or may simply show a hypercorrect late West Saxon spelling; compare the form hrywsung at reusing n. In Old English the prefixed form gehrēowsian (compare y- prefix) is also attested; compare also behrēowsian bireusy v.
